Canada eTA

If you are an American reading this because a search result told you to buy an eTA, you can stop. The requirement does not apply to you. What follows is who it does apply to, because that is often the person you are travelling with.

Who is exempt and who is not

This is the entire question, so it goes first.

A US citizen flying to Toronto

No eTA

Exempt. US citizens do not need an eTA. Carry a valid US passport, which is what the airline and the border officer will ask for.

A US green card holder flying to Toronto

No eTA

Exempt since 26 April 2022. Carry a valid passport from your country of nationality together with your green card. Both documents, not one.

A visa exempt foreign national flying to Canada

eTA required

Required. Citizens of most visa exempt countries need an eTA to fly to or transit through Canada. This is the case the whole scheme exists for.

Driving or taking a boat across the border

No eTA

The eTA applies to air travel. Arriving by land or sea does not require one, whatever your nationality.

Some applications take longer if documents are requested.

What Americans carry instead

Being exempt from the eTA is not the same as needing nothing.

Where to apply, if you need to

One official address, and it is the government's own.

canada.caOfficial, Canada

Canada charges CAN$7 and warns about the paid intermediaries that rank alongside it. Because the official fee is so low, the markup on this particular permit is proportionally the largest on this site: a service charging 50 dollars is charging roughly seven times the government price.

What goes wrong

Almost all of it is Americans buying something they do not need.

  • An American buying an eTA. US citizens are exempt. If a site sold you one, it sold you nothing, because there is no eTA record to create for a US passport.
  • A green card holder carrying only the green card. The exemption requires a valid passport from your country of nationality as well. Airlines check this at the gate.
  • Assuming the eTA covers land crossings. It does not. It is an air travel requirement, and driving across never needed one.
  • Paying an agency the fee plus a service charge. The government price is CAN$7. Anything substantially above that is a reseller.

What changed

The green card exemption is the change most people missed.

  1. The eTA becomes fully enforced for visa exempt air travellers to Canada.

  2. US lawful permanent residents become exempt from the eTA, provided they carry a valid passport and a valid green card.

EXEMPT

There is nothing for you to buy

US citizens do not need a Canadian eTA, and neither do US permanent residents carrying a passport and a green card. If a website is offering to process one for your American passport, it is offering a document that will never be issued.

Questions

Do US citizens need an eTA for Canada?

No. US citizens are exempt from the electronic travel authorisation. You travel on a valid US passport. There is no eTA record to create for a US passport, so there is also nothing for an agency to sell you.

Do green card holders need a Canada eTA?

No, not since 26 April 2022. US lawful permanent residents are exempt, but they must carry both a valid passport from their country of nationality and a valid green card. Carrying only one of the two has caused boarding refusals.

How much does a Canada eTA cost?

CAN$7 for the people who need one, paid on the Government of Canada website. It is valid for five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.

Do I need an eTA to drive into Canada?

No. The eTA applies to air travel, including flights transiting through Canada. Arriving by land or by sea has never required one.

Can I fly to Canada with a driver's licence?

No. Air travel to Canada requires a passport for US citizens. An enhanced driver's licence may be accepted at a land border but is not sufficient for a flight.

What is the official Canada eTA website?

canada.ca. The Government of Canada runs the application itself and charges CAN$7. Sites charging considerably more are intermediaries.
